A Good Hair Cut

Monday, January 31st, 2005

After my last experience at the “hair salon” I realized that a good hair cut is probably one of the most important elements in the health of your hair. I moved to San Francisco last year and use my best friend’s “hair lady.” She is from Ireland, and not to stereotype, but I think she likes to have a little “nip” now and again. But, that is not the real problem. The real problem is the way in which she “cuts” my hair. And, cuts deserves the quotes. Many times she uses a razor comb device which really feels like it is struggling to cut my hair. Since I have started using her, my hair has taken a noticeable change for the worse in terms of what is left on my head. Needless to say, I have seen the light and will be going to someone who knows what they are doing next time I need a hair cut. Give your hair a shot and get it cut by someone who is experienced, well trained and uses sharp scissors to cut your hair.

Minoxidil vs Rogaine - Is There A Difference?

Thursday, January 27th, 2005

For years, Rogaine was the only over the counter hair loss solution available to treat hair loss in both men and women. About 3 years ago, the patents on Rogaine were removed and the generic market for Minoxidil opened up. Soon after major pharmeceutical manufacturers like Bauch and Lomb began to produce Minoxidil for generic retail sale. Unfortunately for them, there were many other people who had the same idea and the market was soon flooded with generic Rogine product. This was great for consumers as Minoxidil was plentiful and cheap. But, the question still remained, was Minoxidil different than Rogaine?

The answer is that Rogaine and Minoxidil are exactly the same. I was told this by our representative at Pharmacia & Upjohn, the makers of Rogaine. Now Pharmacia is owned by Pfizer, but the product is still the same. So, you can purchase Minoxidil as a low cost substitute to Rogaine and rest assured that it is just as effective as the brand name Rogaine.

Quality Shampoos and Conditioners

Wednesday, January 26th, 2005

No matter what hair loss treatment you may or may not be using, there is something that is crucial in maintaining your hair’s health, quality shampoo products. I have used many products over the years including, Progaine shampoo, Revivogen shampoo, and Nioxin. Today I am using Biolage shampoo and conditioner and I have to say, that I can really notice a difference in how my hair feels and looks. My hair is usually pretty dry, but I never really noticed this until I used a good quality hydrating shampoo. Without a quality shampoo and conditioning regimen, your scalp can dry out fast. And, if you are using products like Minoxidil or Rogaine, this may lead to some irritation on your scalp. So, do your hair a favor and spend a few extra bucks on some decent products.

Women’s Hair Loss

Sunday, January 23rd, 2005

Women suffer from hair loss, just as men do, even though it is not as widely publicized. However, there are most likely just as many women that suffer from hair loss as there are men. With that said, there are many differences in the causes of female hair loss from their male counterparts. Many women lose their hair due to stress or because of chemical/hormonal imbalances. It is common in these situations for women to lose hair in spots or clumps. This type of hair loss is not treatable with common over the counter treatments like Rogaine for Women. In these situations, it is best for the woman to consult her physician to help diagnose where the problem is coming from and treating it accordingly. For women with hereditary hair loss, there is good news. Like men, there are over the counter medications like Rogaine and it’s generic counterpart Minoxidil that are readily available. There are even new treatments like Revivogen with new anti-DHT technology built in.

You can read all about the causes and solutions for female hair loss at Minoxidil for Less.

The Revivogen Formula

Friday, January 21st, 2005

Almost 10 years ago, Rogaine revolutionized the way men and women treat hereditary hair loss. Today, not much has changed. There is only one other over the counter product that is revolutionizing hair loss treatment once again. Revivogen is an all natural product available in shampoo and topical solutions that can be applied directly to the scalp. The all natural forumula has been shown in independent trials to regrow hair in both men and women. Revivogen uses an anti-DHT formula to help stimulate and reinvigorate hair follicles in the scalp to continue producing hair. You can read more about the Revivogen Formula at Minoxidil for Less’ website.

Losing My Hair

Wednesday, January 19th, 2005

I moved to San Francisco in the last year, and one of the most troubling parts has been finding a new hair cutter person. Sorry, I can’t say “hair dresser” or “hair sytlist.” I have been using my best friend’s hair cutter lady and to be honest, she is a complete hack. I realized yesterday, when she was “cutting” my hair, that I really need to go to someone else to get my hair cut…for my hair’s sake. The tools she “uses” and her methods are probably killing off the hair that is on my scalp. My point here is, use common sense when choosing who cuts your hair. Make sure they are not pulling your hair out, using some crazy tools or just don’t seem to know what they are doing. Sorry Scotty, Lilly is out. Anyone know of a good hair cutter lady in SF?

Nioxin and Hair Loss

Monday, January 17th, 2005

If you are seeking a solution to your hair loss, you have certainly heard of Nioxin. Nioxin is touted by many to help regrow hair in people with hereditary and other types of hair loss, but this has been proven not to be the case. Nioxin even says this on their website. So, as you can see, even Nioxin will tell you that their forumla will not regrow hair. So, I decided to try it out for a while and see what it did for my hair. Yes, I tried it to see, in addition to how my hair looked, if it regrew hair, made my hair look fuller, thicker, etc. So, I used Nioxin 5 to 6 days a week for 3 months. I can say that my hair is noticeably drier and it has thinned even more in the time I have been using it. This is not to say that Nioxin is responsible for my increased thinning on my scalp. But, I will say that my hair is thicker and healthier when I was using Biolage conditioner in conjunction with their shampoo. This is not a hair loss shampoo, but simply a high quality shampoo that is now available at Walgreens. So, if you are thinking of using Nioxin, I would not recommend it.

Kirkland Minoxidil

Thursday, January 13th, 2005

For years, Pharmacia and Upjon held a patent to the production of Minoxidil for it’s brand name product Rogaine. In the late 90’s, the patent expired and many large pharmaceutical companies like Bauch and Lomb got into the commercial production of Minoxidil. As with many products, the market became saturated quickly with generic Minoxidil products and the price quickly bottomed out. One of the main reasons for this was the introduction of Kirkland Minoxidil by our friends at Costco. Costco had such a huge advantage as they had such a great sales channel to introduce their new Minoxidil product to. Kirkland Minoxidil was available for purchase over the internet from Costco for a long time, but due to much tighter shipping regulations, they were forced to stop selling on line. Today, specialty outfits like Minoxidil for Less are your best source for Kirkland Minoxidil and other hair loss treatments and information.
